How to get there: From Monzen-Nakacho Station (Exit 3), turn right along Eitai-dori, then turn right again at the first lights. Walk for about 200 meters, straight across the next lights. When you reach a fork in the road, take the street to the left. You will see Zezankyo on the right after about 50 meters. The entrance is around the corner, on the side street.

What works: Tempura as good as it gets.

What doesn't: Off-the-beaten-track location, eccentric decor.

Number of seats: Counter for 9, 2nd floor private rooms for 20 (12 with horigotatsu leg wells; 8 on tatami).

Smoking: Not permitted at counter.

Price per head: Lunch from ¥10,500; dinner from ¥15,750 (¥16,800 with rice,soup and pickles).

Drinks: Beer ¥800; sake ¥800; wine from ¥2,800/half bottle, from ¥5,500/bottle.

Credit cards: Most major cards accepted.
